3 ways older doctors can fight age discrimination

As a doctor, you provide life-saving care to your patients. When you have been in the medical field for decades, you should be rewarded and appreciated. Unfortunately, the opposite may occur. As an older physician, you may find yourself being the victim of age discrimination.

Age discrimination in the workplace is illegal, and it is possible to overcome. Recently, a 77-year-old Cleveland doctor won an age discrimination lawsuit after he was forced to retire after working in the hospital for almost 20 years. If you suspect your employer is being discriminatory toward you because of your age, here is what you should do.

1. Take notes

You need substantial evidence to prove age discrimination. Be sure to document any signs of discrimination. For example, if your employer is pressuring you to retire early or is questioning your competency due to your age, take notes of the details and talk to any witnesses to corroborate the details.

2. Get power in numbers

If there are other workers in your age group, talk to them and see if they are experiencing anything similar. You may be able to band together with other older doctors and nurses to prove there is a culture of discrimination. This will strengthen your argument.

3. Get professionals to help you

You cannot combat ageism at your hospital on your own. The first thing you can do is file a complaint with the HR department at your workplace. It is important to remember, however, that while the HR department should investigate the issue, they ultimately work for your employer. This is why you may want to talk to a lawyer to see if it is worth bringing your case to court. You may also want to get in touch with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Facing discrimination because of your age is frustrating, but you may be able to sue your employer because of it.
